To get the young critics thinking about food, to introduce them to some real chefs in the industry, and to get them into the kitchen themselves, we had Antony and Rob from The Warehouse Cafe (a vegetarian non-profit restaurant in Digbeth) come and hang out with us for a couple hours at the school yesterday. Here's Antony on the left, Rob on the right, and the young lads in their blazers below.
The pair brought apple crisps, an example of the raw food they prepare - some of the boys said they 'taste like paper', others really enjoyed them. I would like to make them at home they were so good.
Rob had us mess with our senses by getting everyone to eat a gummy candy and plug our nose while chewing it. The taste ENTIRELY disappeared, it was really weird. Try it at home.
After a break... time for the cooking demo. The boys put their aprons on and were ready to go.
Who likes avocado?
With avocado, banana and cocoa powder.... Rob made a chocolate mousse.
Time for the kitchen. I think he's enjoying the avocado!
Cutting the avocado.
and banana.
Now you mash it all up...
and voila - dessert.
The jury were told that presentation is of the utmost importance at a restaurant, so they carefully put the mousse into their cups so as not splatter brown stuff all over the cup. Eww.
The finished products...
TASTE TIME!!!
The dessert was, for most of the boys, their first fruit-based mousse, and for some, their first time eating avocado. Most of them gave it a thumbs up, some even two.
On Friday, we brainstorm the AWARD CATEGORIES. Stay tuned.
